The Step Pyramid (upper left) was constructed by the architect Imhotep for King Djoser in 2800BC. It is the oldest of 123 known pyramids.
The builders of this time did not know how to support a column so, these had to be capped for support (lower left). These are the oldest known columns at about 5000 years in age.
Preceding the Great Pyramids of Giza, early attempts were made at this style of building. The Bent Pyramid (upper right) is the one in the distance and in the red insert.
The lower sides were the first ones built. The architects then found if they continued upwards, the pyramid would collapse from its own weight. A slight alteration was done to correct this defect. |
