The statue of Christ the Redeemer is 250 feet tall and stands on Corcovado Mountain at 2,300 feet above the city. It is one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. The statue took nine years to build and was completed in 1931. It overlooks the city of Rio and Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon (Picture below)
In 2008 the statue was struck by lightning but survived because it is made of soapstone, an insulator. |
